What makes Amsterdam’s tech scene special?

There’s a reason tech talent chooses Amsterdam. The city’s continued acumen for innovation, its world-class digital infrastructure and its roster of cutting-edge companies and events make it a haven for any tech professional.

Amsterdam: a tech scene like no other

You’ve heard all about Amsterdam’s ICT ecosystem. The city’s startups, corporates and tech initiatives have been all over the news and social media feeds with their smart tech solutions and innovations. And tech talent – that’s you – is in demand. But don’t just take our word for it – the numbers speak for themselves. Adyen is currently looking to hire 150 developers in 2018 alone. Same for Elsevier, which is seeking 120 tech workers.

So many global tech giants have a presence in Amsterdam. But it’s not just about the massive corporates; a host of top scale-ups also made their start in Amsterdam. Adyen, Picnic, Takeaway.com; ring any bells? Thought so, and they all have vacancies that are part of project: a.

Thanks to the city’s top-notch startup and tech ecosystem, impressive new startups are constantly popping up in the city. It’s no wonder that 50 Dutch startups and scale-ups made it onto Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 EMEA list.

Simply put: thanks to its successful cocktail of great businesses, people, culture and infrastructure, Amsterdam is a great fit for any tech professional.

Leading tech developments and faster broadband

Amsterdam’s digital infrastructure – boasting some of the fastest broadband speeds on the planet –arms engineers, developers and coders with the tools they need to get the job done. The city is already home to the largest data-transport hub in the world (AMS-IX); yet, this already great digital connectivity is always improving. In fact, just last year datacentre.com opened the 100%-sustainable-energy-powered AMS1 data centre – and Equinix launched the state-of-the-art AM4 data centre at the Amsterdam Science Park campus.

Speaking of the Amsterdam Science Park, the location is a hotbed for technological development. The University of Amsterdam, VU University Amsterdam, the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) and the Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC) are currently collaborating at the park to define what’s next for data analytics, data visualization, image recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Not to mention, the park’s Advanced Research Centre for Nanolithography (ARCNL) is set to change the world as we know it, thanks to some truly ground-breaking nanotechnology research. Countless other disruptive tech companies are based in Amsterdam Science Park and its Startup Village, with new breakthroughs happening every day. Honestly, we could easily fill up a decade’s worth of blog posts and articles just about the park’s amazing developments.

Tech events galore

One of the best parts about Amsterdam’s tech scene is how open and collaborative it is. Networking is a breeze in Amsterdam and its surrounding areas, and the region’s close-knit community means you’re never too far away from another tech expert to bounce ideas off. The city’s list of high-quality tech conferences, events, hackathons and tech academies is insane, and that list is growing longer all the time. One of the highlights of the city’s conference calendar is TNW Conference, which gathers 15,000 tech experts to discuss future web trends and meet the world's leading innovators in technology and design. The 10 successful project: a candidates will get to attend this two-day conference when they visit into the city for their interviews. Talk about lucky! And did we mention that flights and accommodation are included? Get the lowdown on project: a.

Accessibility and the best work-life balance

Of course, there’s much more to the Dutch capital than its awesome tech scene. Amsterdam is one of the most liveable cities in the world. According to the latest OECD Better Life Index, Dutch residents enjoy the world’s best work-life balance, which is ideal: as there’s so much to do in Amsterdam. On top of those incredible tech events we mentioned earlier, the cultural agenda in the city is remarkable. From the best festivals and nights-out to inspiring exhibitions and concerts, there’s no shortage of things to do in your spare time.

Getting around in Amsterdam couldn’t be easier. Everything in the city is never more than a short bike ride or tram ride away. But let’s not forget about the nearby cities of Haarlem and Zaandam – both of which are stunning and just a train ride away. If you can manage to tear yourself away from Amsterdam and the surrounding area – or if you want to visit friends/family in other countries – Amsterdam Airport Schiphol provides 323 flight connections to airports in 98 countries by more than 100 different airlines.

Needless to say, Amsterdam covers all bases.
